Care Has No Gender: Why More Men Are Needed in Caregiving

For years, caregiving has been viewed as a role mainly for women, but this perception is slowly changing. As demand for home care continues to grow in Ireland, the sector cannot afford to overlook half the population. Men have just as much to offer in caregiving roles, bringing compassion, strength, and reliability to the people who need it most.

Care work is built on simple but powerful qualities: patience, respect, and the ability to support someone through their daily life. Tasks like helping with meals, assisting with mobility, managing medication, or providing companionship are not defined by gender. They are defined by the person doing them. In fact, research shows men can be just as effective and empathetic in care roles as women.

Despite this, many men still face barriers such as social stigma and limited role models. However, organisations like Atlantic Care are helping change this by promoting inclusivity and proper training.
